Jan was born in Portsmouth, Ohio to William and Dorothy Knauss. In 1956 the family moved to Southern California where she met and married a handsome airman, Dominick Chiono. He was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base but soon transferred to Castle Air Force Base in Atwater. While there, they had two children.
