Richard "Rick" Gutierrez Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Miguel Gutierrez, announces his passing on June 22nd, 2025, just shy of his 55th birthday. Richard, or Rick as most of us knew him, was born on August 13th, 1970, in Chowchilla, California. Rick’s journey was one of dedication, love, and an unwavering spirit that touched countless lives.

Rick's early years were spent in Merced, where he lived until his freshman year of high school before moving to Winton. It was there, at the tender age of 15, that he began his lifelong dedication to hard work, joining his father in the drywall trade. This early start shaped his strong work ethic, leading him to join the Carpenters Union in 1993, and later becoming a skilled craftsman in metal stud framing and drywall, eventually rising to the role of foreman – a testament to his hard work and leadership.

But Rick’s life was far more than his work. In 1998, a challenge to "do better" sparked his passion for coaching with the Winton Cowboys. He poured his heart into coaching not only his own boys but countless other young athletes, continuing with the El Capitan Gauchos and the Merced Blue Devils. He was also a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan and a loyal San Francisco Giants fan. His love for sports, whether youth or professional, was undeniable—he was truly there for it all. Rick was a mentor, a guide, and an inspiration on the field, instilling in his players not just skills, but character, leaving an unforgettable mark on many lives.

Beyond the sidelines, Rick found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had a nurturing hand for succulents and a legendary talent for BBQing and cooking. Many of us fondly remember "Taco Sundays" at his home, where he'd host numerous players after games, creating a sense of community and family. His tri-tip sandwiches and tacos were famous, a testament to his generosity and love for bringing people together. Rick's generosity extended beyond his home kitchen. He was a dedicated volunteer, lending his culinary skills to the Winton VFW and even traveling to Davis Monthan AFB when his son was stationed there, always ready to help at events benefiting kids.

Rick’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He met his beloved wife, Leticia, in 1986. After three years of dating, he respectfully asked her late brother Edward for her hand, and they were married on June 24th, 1989. For 36 beautiful years, they built a life together, blessed with four amazing boys: Ricky, Mikey, David, and Julian.

In December of 2022, Rick faced a formidable opponent when he was diagnosed with A.L.L. leukemia. True to his strong spirit, he bravely fought and went into remission in the summer of 2023. Yet, after nearly two years of preventive treatments, a follow-up biopsy revealed another challenge: A.M.L. leukemia. His doctor remarked that in his ten years of practice, he had never seen someone battle two different types of leukemia. Rick was hospitalized for five weeks and, though his mind and soul remained incredibly strong, his body simply could not keep up.

Rick was preceded in death by his father Ricardo, his uncle Victor Barajas, and his mother-in-law Gloria Sanchez. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Leticia; his loving mother, Margarita; his four sons, Ricky, Mike, David, and Julian, along with their respective significant others. He is also survived by his brothers Raul Rodriguez and Joseph Gutierrez, his sisters Vicky Bryant and Adelina Ortega, and his ultimate pride and joys, his grandchildren, Brylee, Beckham, and Zoë. He will also be dearly missed by his numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

Rick Gutierrez was a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished son, a beloved Tio, a proud Papa, and a respected coach. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of hard work, unwavering love for his family, and generous spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched. He may be gone, but his spirit, like the warmth of his BBQ, will remain in our hearts forever.
