Norman Amoth Obituary

Norman Gene Amoth was born on June 18, 1933, in Wales, North Dakota, to Albert and Margaret Toews Amoth. He passed away on May 27, 2024, in Merced, California, at age 90.

When he was eight years old, Dad, along with his family, moved from Langdon, North Dakota, to the beautiful mountains of northern Idaho. Here he spent much time fishing and playing in the Kootenai River. Even as a child, he was resourceful, making toys for himself and his siblings. As a teenager, he helped his dad farm grain. He also ran a ferry that crossed the Kootenai River.

He was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, at a young age. Dad spent two years in Los Angeles in a service unit. While living with his sister Ruby and her family in Livingston, California, Dad met Neoma Ruth Koehn. They were married on October 11, 1964, by Minister Don Millsap.

They began their married life in Livingston, but soon moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho. After two years in Idaho, they returned to California where he spent the remainder of his life.

Dad spent quite a few years driving truck for different employers. In his later years, he farmed almonds and did mechanic work for his neighbors.

Known for his resourcefulness, Dad could fix almost anything. He continued to work even as he got older, and he often said that he didn’t feel any worse working than he did sitting around. Other countries and nationalities fascinated him. Although he never traveled to a foreign country, he had many books about them. Dad was interested in people and loved to talk to them about their lives. He passed out many gospel tracts.

In January of 2023, Dad found new joy in his Christian life and put forth effort to do his part in the congregation.

His survivors include his wife, Neoma; one daughter Maria and husband Paul Koehn; four grandchildren, Robyn Koehn, LoriAnne and husband Trevor Sommers, DeVonn Koehn, and Jamin Koehn; and one great granddaughter, Brielle Sommers; all of Livingston, California; one brother, Victor Amoth and wife Nancy; two sisters, Betty Hofstetter, and Ruby and husband Richard Seaman; and special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
