Moses Joe Spien – 86 of Atwater passed away in the comfort of his home on Sunday, June 23rd.
Moses was born January 12, 1938, in Livingston, CA to parents Elias and Raquel Sapien. His parents migrated from Mexico, settling in Livingston; he was one of nine children.
From a young age he worked alongside his siblings on their family's sweet potato farm. In his early 20s, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served 20 years before retiring. He served in the Vietnam War and many Westpac tours, including Japan and the Philippines. Upon retirement, he had reached an E8 Senior Chief. After his retirement he worked for S&K Sales Co. as a sales executive for 27 years.
Moses took great pride in his Military Career and career and S&K Sales, but above all he enjoyed the time spent making memories with wife and family. On December 13, 1969, he married his high school crush, Mickey Bryant. They settled into Spring Valley, a little suburb in San Diego, CA where they were blessed to live in the same home for over 40 years and raise their three children.
Moses is survived by his son William “Billy“ (Dora) Calcutt, daughter’s Rebecca “Becki” (John) Cleary, and Teresa Sapien. As well as six grandchildren: Sabrina (Daniel) Avalle, James Calcutt, Natalie Cleary, Kenzie Cleary, Cassidy Cleary, Gabi Hamilton and sister Melody Gutierrez
He is preceded in death by his wife Mickey Sapien, his parents and siblings: Antonita Sapien, Joseph Sapien, Alfred Sapien, Elias “Chada” Sapien, Tonia Hubbard, Shirley Vasquez and Rachel Guiterrez.
The viewing and evening Rosary will be at Wilson Family Funeral Chapel of Merced, Thursday, July 18th. Viewing from 4:00pm-6:00pm, and Rosary to begin at 6:00pm.
Funeral Mass will be at the Shrine of St, Jude in Livingston CA, at 10:00am on Friday, July 19th
He will reach his final resting place next to his wife Mickey at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, CA. On Monday, July 22, with full Military Honors at 1:15pm
