Joseph T. Morris, Jr., affectionately known as Papa Joe, was born on May 2, 1929, in Warm Springs, VA to Rebecca Moats and Joseph T. Morris, Sr. He was raised in Warm Springs with his brother and two sisters who preceded him in death.
As a teenager, Papa Joe worked as a cook at the Greenbrier America’s Resort in West Virginia. After High School, Papa Joe enlisted in the Air Force and married his first wife Catherine (deceased) and had 6 children (Joyce, Joseph III, Judy (deceased), John, Juliana, and Jenese).
While in the military, Papa Joe traveled overseas and to various parts of the United States. He participated in WWII and the Vietnam War before retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant after serving 26 years. Papa Joe then went on to obtain a degree from Merced College.
After dating for several years, Papa Joe and Jessie M. Thompson were married in May 2003. Via this union, Papa Joe inherited Grance Thompson, Jr (stepson). Being such an avid car enthusiast, after retiring from the military, Papa Joe worked for Razzari Dodge Ford, formerly known as Marasti Motors, in Merced, CA, and retired from there after 21 years.
In addition to his love for cars, Papa Joe also loved dogs, particularly, Boston Terriers, and in fact, had 5 over the course of many years. Papa Joe lived a full life and will be remembered by all his family and friends for his love, support, and mentorship.
Papa Joe passed away September 27, 2023, at 1838 hours, and was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and his daughter Judy Herrera (Roger). He is survived by his loving spouse Jessie M. Morris “MiMi”, children Joyce (Al), Joseph III (Cheryl), John (Anna), Juliana, Jenese (Tim), 12 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren with extended family; stepson Grance Jr., 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren, and an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, family, loved ones and friends.
