John Riis-Christensen Obituary

Retired Police Chief John Riis-Christensen passed away surrounded by family on May 11, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, honor, devotion, and love.

John lived a life marked by dedication to country, community, and family. Born, in Canada in 1941, he moved to the states at the age of 13 where his deep love for this country began. He went on to serve in the United States Air Force proudly dedicating four years as an airplane mechanic. After his military service, he became a US citizen and worked as an auto mechanic, but it was his calling to protect and serve that would define the course of his life.

John began his law enforcement career as a reserve police officer with the Atwater Police Department. His commitment, integrity, and deep love for the community soon led him to join the force full time. Over the next 30 years, he served Atwater with pride, compassion, and steadfast leadership, ultimately retiring as Chief of Police. He loved being a police officer and took great pride in serving the community he cherished. His work was never just a job to him — it was a true calling, one he embraced with honor and purpose.

Outside of his service, John was a devoted family man who treasured every moment with the people he loved most. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, John Chris Riis-Christensen, and his grandson, little John. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Riis-Christensen; his daughters, Dawn Willhite (née Riis-Christensen) and Terri Riis-Christensen; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

John adored his family and especially loved taking them traveling across this great country, which he deeply loved, respected, and believed in. He held fast to its founding principles and lived his life by them with pride and conviction.

His life was a testament to service, faithfulness, and love. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, fellow officers, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.

The family would also like to express profound appreciation to the nurses, care givers, case managers and social workers of Covenant Care Hospice. Their compassion, patience, and unwavering dedication allowed John to live the remainder of his days with dignity and comfort.
