John Frank Kaufman, a dedicated family man, decorated military veteran, and pillar of his community, passed away on October 13, 2023, just shy of his 91st birthday. Born in Bethlehem, PA, on October 27, 1932, he was raised in Plainfield, NJ, where the roots of his exemplary character were first nurtured.
John attended Johns Hopkins University, where he not only excelled academically but also on the lacrosse field. His sense of duty and patriotism led him to a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Navigator. Over the years, he flew numerous missions worldwide and was a vital participant in the Vietnam conflict. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, earning the respect and admiration of those who served alongside him.
It was in Cocoa Beach, FL, where John met the love of his life, Patricia. Their enduring partnership spanned 67 remarkable years, marked by love, mutual respect, and unwavering support. Together, they raised four children: John Jr., Jeffrey, Christopher, and Mary Beth. The family has since expanded to include six cherished grandchildren, who brought immense joy and pride to John’s later years. He was a loving grandfather to Samuel, Benjamin, Hannah, Stephanie, Grant, and Caden and a wonderful father-in-law to Karen, Pam, Greg, and Tim.
Beyond the confines of home and work, John was a towering figure in his community. He served as Chairman of the School Board, impacting countless lives through his educational leadership. A devout Catholic, his faith was not just spoken but actively lived. He devoted many hours to delivering Meals on Wheels, serving those less fortunate with not just sustenance but also compassion and kindness.
Yet, what most people will remember about John was his innate ability to connect with people and his legendary sense of humor. To know John was to experience the warmth of genuine friendship, the comfort of heartfelt laughter, and the reassurance that you mattered. John Frank Kaufman leaves behind a legacy rich in love, service, and enduring impact. His memory will be cherished by his loving family, a multitude of friends, and a community that he so profoundly touched.
Services will be held on October 24th at St. Anthony’s church in Atwater, beginning with a rosary at 9:30 a.m. and followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. There will also be an interment ceremony on October 27th at 10:00 a.m. at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery located at 32053 McCabe Road in Santa Nella
