James Richard Arriaga

James R. Arriaga, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, January 10, 2025, at the age of 90.  Born on September 11, 1934, in Merced, California, James was the cherished son of Manuel Arriaga and Maria Emily Goulart, both of Portuguese heritage. James proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Honor Guard during the 1950s, an experience that included guarding the President and time stationed in Japan.  This distinguished service reflected his deep patriotism and dedication. In the early 1970s, James began a new chapter as an entrepreneur, founding Jim’s Plumbing.  He successfully ran the company until his retirement in 2010.  Even in retirement, James continued visiting his old office every morning to enjoy his coffee and read the newspaper.  His hard work, leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit left a lasting legacy. James was deeply involved in his community, enjoying memberships with the Merced Country Club, Atwater Moose Club, Atwater Rotary Club, Atwater Pentecost Club, Merced Elks Club, and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Atwater. He was also a passionate golfer, spending countless hours on the course, perfecting his game, and sharing moments with friends. Travel and adventure brought immense joy to James, and he took pride in being part owner of one of the first houseboats on Lake McClure. There, he created countless cherished memories with family and friends that will live on in the stories they share. James is survived by his loving children: Nina Neece (husband Robert), Elaine Davis, and David Arriaga; his devoted grandchildren: Kelly Williams (husband Jeremy) and Matt Davis; and his precious great-granddaughter, Adeline Davis. He was predeceased by his sisters, Irene Machado and Elsie Kohlmoos. James’s legacy is one of love, dependability,  hard work, and an enduring zest for life.
