Herbert was the cherished son of John and Leota Willis, and he grew up alongside his older brother, John, and older sister, Virginia. In service to his country, Herbert enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1950, serving honorably until August 1952. He continued his commitment to duty in the U.S. Army Reserve from August 1952 to September 1956. On August 6, 1955, Herbert married Joan Forgie, and together they welcomed two children: a son, Paul (Frances), and a daughter, Peggy. Their marriage lasted until April 1963. In 1965, Herbert was introduced to Joan Sherrill Peterson through a mutual friend. Just three months later, the two were married in Las Vegas on November 20, 1965. Joan brought three young daughters into the marriage—Kerry (Ralph), Sheryl, and Laura—whom Herbert lovingly raised as his own. Herbert and Joan settled in Atwater, California, in 1966. Herbert worked diligently for Pacific Bell from April 1957 until his retirement in December 1992. Herbert’s life was full of adventure and joy. He had a passion for hunting, snow skiing, photography, family camping trips, and fishing. Herbert and Joan shared a beautiful life together, celebrating 55 wonderful years of marriage. Herbert was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to all who knew him. He is survived by his children; five grandchildren: Brian, Christopher (Irma), Andrea (Felipe), and Nathanial (Kelsey); and four great-grandchildren: Adam Jr., Dominick, Zoey, Elena, and Gabriel. Herbert was predeceased by his parents, John and Leota, his brother, John, his sister, Virginia, his granddaughter, Desiree’, and his beloved wife, Joan. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Pacifica Assisted Living, who provided compassionate care and comfort during Herbert’s final days. Herbert’s legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to family will remain in our hearts forever.
