Derek Scott Giles was born in Minot, North Dakota, on July 25, 1979, to John Edward Giles Jr. and Wanda Mae Jeffries Giles. He was raised in Atwater, California, where his parents showered him with love and guidance, helping him grow into a kind, respectable man and a devoted father. Derek shared a special bond with his mother, Wanda, whose fierce and unwavering love shaped the man he became and remained a constant source of strength throughout his life.
He attended Atwater High School, where he met the love of his life, Sonja.
A devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, Derek loved raising his 3 sons and spending time playing video games. Among his greatest joys was becoming a father to his son, John, and he took immense pride in being an uncle to his nephew, Joseph.
Derek dedicated 25 years of faithful service to Walmart, where he was a familiar face in the community—always greeting others with a warm smile.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Giles Jr. Derek is survived by his loving mother, Wanda Giles (Joe), who cherished him with all her heart; his wife, Sonja; and their three sons, Steven, Fernando, and John. He is also survived by his brother, John Edward Giles III (Candace), along with a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family who will carry his memory in their hearts.
