Abel Salinas age 91 (just short of his 92nd birthday) of Winton, Ca. passed away peacefully at his home that he proudly built with his family (est,1970) surrounded by loving, caring wife and the people he loved the most. He was known by many in the community of Winton by Grandpa, and also as “El Viejito del carrito”. He was a beloved Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Great Great Grandfather, Uncle, Compadre, Godfather and friend to many. He was a loving, compassionate, caring, giving, loyal, and respected man. Abel was born March 23, 1933 in Edcouch, TX. where he later became a long time resident of Winton, Ca.
Abel was a proud Veteran who was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and was later honorably discharged after completing his service to his country.
Abel enjoyed collecting recyclables around town to make money for one his favorite pass times of scratching lottery tickets. Abel was a member of the Atwater VFW Post 9946 and Winton VFW Post 7792. He also was an AA sponsor to many throughout the years. He loved watching football especially when his favorite player Tom Brady was on the field.
Abel was a self-made hardworking man all of his life. Abel was a jack of many trades. Some of his occupations included farm laborer, welder, owner and operator of Elva’s Place, enthusiastic flea market vendor of CD’s and cassettes at many flea markets throughout the Central Valley. The vast majority of his career was spent working as a heavy equipment operator for Barroso and Sons Dairy where he took pride in all the work he did for them.
Abel Salinas is preceded in death by his mother Evangelina Garza Cortez, his brother Francisco Salinas, daughters Soyla Salinas and Sylvia Salinas, and sons Sandy Salinas and Simon Salinas.
Abel Salinas is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Elva Salinas. He is also survived by his two sisters Ofelia Cortez and Francis Rodriguez. He is also survived by his three daughters Sonia Salinas, Selma Salinas, and Sofia Hurtado (Fernando). He also left behind many cousins, nephews, and nieces. Abel was a loving grandfather to 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.
He will be deeply missed and loved by all of his family, friends, and the whole community of Winton.
Abel will be put to rest Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 1:00pm at the Winton Cemetery located at 7651 Almond Ave, Winton, CA 95388.
A celebration of life will follow after burial services at the Winton Community Hall, 7091 Walnut Ave, Winton, CA 95388.
